Recap: July 2021 Commitment Series with Partnership for Southern Equity

On July 28, 2021, Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative hosted the AWBI Community Wealth Building Commitment Series: Closing the Racial Wealth Gap through Shared Prosperity with Latresa McLawhorn Ryan, Executive Director of the Atlanta Wealth Building Initiative (AWBI) and Nathaniel Smith, Founder and Chief Equity Officer of Partnership for Southern Equity (PSE).

We were honored to share the ways AWBI is working hand in hand with PSE to advance community wealth building strategies to reimagine our current systems and move Atlanta toward a more equitable and sustainable future. Our key takeaways the session included:

  1. Wealth is more than financial assets. More about this here.

  2. Racial wealth inequity was birthed out of intentional and lasting policies. We must acknowledge Atlanta’s history to address wealth inequity.

  3. Equitable procurement is a critical pathway for creating equity. That is why AWBI is advising Emory University on creating equitable procurement practices and why Partnership for Southern Equity launched the Justice40 Initiative.

  4. Critical to wealth creation is helping businesses age and grow in place. That is why AWBI works with partners like Project Equity to coordinate opportunities for conversion to employee-owner models.

Make sure to join us for the next installment of the series, which will be held on September 29 and will feature Dr. Lakeysha Hallmon, Founder and CEO, The Village Market & Our Village United. Learn more & Register.
